Librairie Galignani

Librairie Galignani, Paris

The Galignani bookstore, tracing its roots to Venice in 1520, claims to be the first English bookstore in continental Europe. Their Paris location, established in the 1930s near the Tuileries Gardens, boasts a historic charm with beautiful colonnades and mosaic floors. Situated amidst luxurious surroundings, including Hotel Le Meurice and Cafรฉ Angelina, the bookstore exudes chic elegance, living up to its prestigious setting. Oh, by the way, you simply must try the hot chocolate from Cafe Angelina – established in 1903 – it’s unlike any other I’ve ever tasted! Trust me, you won’t regret it.

In contrast to the densely packed second-hand English bookstores I typically visit in Paris, Galignani stands out with its spacious, well-lit interior, adorned with library ladders and pristine wooden shelves displaying beautiful books. Despite feeling a bit intimidated by the grandeur and the weighty historical and cultural tomes, my initial purpose was simple: finding an English book for my journey back home.

I stumbled upon the English books section at the end of the bookstore. Their collection spans the spectrum, ranging from the latest bestsellers to timeless classics meticulously arranged in alphabetical order. And if you’re seeking a Parisian touch, there’s an extensive array of books about the city, ideal for thoughtful gifts.

The staff here is impressively well-versed and humble, who will just make your day with their best knowledge.
